BNCBC President, Ella Shalom, summarises the progress of the Boat Club during Michaelmas Term 2022.
Quick look back on the last term of winter ergs, cold Godstow mornings & novice recruitment!
Seniors started the term strong with the delivery of our new Stampfli VIlls, a strong 3rd place performance by our men’s VIIl in IWL and both men’s and women’s crews racing in Autumn Fours. Unfortunately due to high stream and cancellation we didn’t get to race at Wallingford, but the work we put down on the water in preparation will serve us well in Torpids next term.
We had a great term for novice recruitment thanks to our Wonderful captains, and had amazing successes in both Nepthys and Linacre Regattas!
Linacre Regatta had an excellent start to the week by our novices! On day one, the women, coxed by Ollie Burgess, stormed ahead of Mansfield and secured our first win of the day in a strong and assertive row. Next up was our mixed boat, coxed by our novice Alex Roberts. they recovered well after an unfortunate crab and kept the legs on all the way home, but Osler House beat them to the line. Finally the men, coxed by Matthew Campbell, didn’t let the rain get them down and powered through the line with no threat from their opposition Teddy Hall.
After amber flag on the river halted racing on Thursday and Friday, we came back strong for racing on the final day of Linacre Regatta. Amazing effort from both our novice crews, and special thank you to Anushka Chugh and Helen Robertson, our x-status coxes, who stepped up at the last minute to make sure our crews could race in difficult stream conditions! Our men’s crew had a great win against Hertford, and narrowly missed out on the quarter finals after a close race with New College! Our women’s crew had amazing wins against Peter’s and Wolfson – both times making great come backs from at least a length down to beat them to the line. They just missed out on the semifinals after a close race with Lincoln, but we couldn’t be prouder!
Big thank you to our captains for their hard work this term and their commitment to training up our novices! Overall a successful term – getting the legs down and heads in the boat, setting the groundwork for a competitive bumps campaign at Torpids 2023!!
